In the most recent CoSE Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee meeting at in June, we had insightful discussions about our current school and college EDI initiatives. Here's a summary of some of the key themes discussed:

Active Upstander June Update

Updates on the Active Upstander trainings that have taken place in the last few months were shared. The first grouping of anonymous feedback from the Active Upstander training was collected and shared with EDI committee members. This feedback highlighted the following questions:

  • Now that you have completed this training, will you approach scenarios similar to those discussed in the session differently?
  • Did you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts during the training?
  • Overall, were you satisfied with the training?
  • Was the content of the training relevant to you at work?
  • Would you recommend the training to a colleague?

URTUC (Understanding Racism, transforming University Cultures) Update

Katie Farell shared an update from URTUC 2021 -2024.

The four main areas of focus were:

  • Addressing harassment
  • Employment patterns
  • Ethnicity degree awarding gap
  • Culture change

Inclusive working guideline draft – review and comments

The final draft of a document on inclusive working guidelines was shared with the EDI committee for feedback. The aim will be to promote these guidelines throughout the college and to the Neurodiversity Hub webpages.

SAMH; Let’s TALK project (Paper 4)

Information on the Let’s TALK programme created by the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH) was shared with the EDI committee. The aims of the programme:

  • To raise awareness around mental health issues
  • Tackle stigma and discrimination which often deters people from seeking the help they need
  • Signposting people to local support services

EDI leads can look to offer this programme to their schools.
