Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE), opened 29 March button‌The Imaging Centre of Excellence houses the UK’s first ultra-high field 7 Tesla (7T) MRI scanner, located in a clinical setting.

Opened Spring 2017, ICE is the latest investment by University of Glasgow at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the largest acute hospital in Western Europe.

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow said “This building is the physical representation of a very successful collaboration between the University of Glasgow, Glasgow City Council and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The creation of this internationally competitive centre incorporating NHS, academic and industry partners will maximise and facilitate the economic impact from the clinical research excellence at the QEUH.”

Complementing infrastructure developed by the University in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, including the closely located Clinical Research Facility and Queen Elizabeth Teaching and Learning Centre, the facility hosts world leading imaging clinical research facilities which provide a nexus for academic, NHS and industrial expertise into brain imaging whilst further strengthening Glasgow’s position as a world leader in precision medicine.

Most notably, the building includes a 7 Tesla (7T) MRI scanner, an ultra-high resolution scanner which is the first of its kind fully integrated within a clinical site in the UK underpinned by world-leading clinical expertise in stroke, cardiovascular disease and brain imaging. The building accommodates a 3 Tesla MRI scanner and 320 slice/large detector CT.

ICE hosts 11,000 sq ft of space for industry, expanding the University’s Clinical Innovation Zone in the Queen Elizabeth Teaching and Learning Centre, to a total area of 22,000 sq ft. This space facilitates access to University of Glasgow’s internationally renowned researchers in state-of the-art facilities, positioned alongside industry partners. Collectively, this approach aims to transform the management of chronic diseases globally by accelerating biomedical research through open innovation approaches, resulting in high quality health care provision and economic growth.

Through funding totalling £32 million, ICE is supported by the UK Government and the Medical Research Council (MRC) as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), ERDF and Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation. ICE is expected to generate up to 400 high value new jobs over a seven year period, along with nearly £85 million for the local economy.
