A new innovative Masters programme, aligned with the evolving RCPath curricula, has been custom-designed, capitalising on the expertise of multiple nationally and internationally-recognised pathologists, clinical scientists and academic staff from the University of Glasgow, including the multi-award-winning Medical Genetics & Genomics teaching team.

This inter-disciplinary flexible MSc in Molecular Pathology comprises: an initial year of Core (PGCert) courses providing the fundamental and applied knowledge required for the most up-to-date molecular pathology diagnosis; a year of Advanced  courses covering research and academic molecular pathology; and a subsequent research dissertation project, leading to a Masters qualification.

The student numbers have far exceeded initial predictions. In the first year (2016-17) of the programme, 17 students (12 histopathology trainees and 5 laboratory scientists working in Laboratory Genetics) successfully completed the Core courses, which were designed to cover all of the molecular pathology contents of the 2015 RCPath Curriculum for Specialty Training in Histopathology.

In the programme’s second year (2017-2018), 5 students have progressed to the Advanced courses and a further 8 students are currently undertaking the Core courses.

In addition, one student is currently undertaking an MSc in Bioinformatics, Polyomics and Systems Biology, funded by a Scholarship award from the Node.
