Biography

Dr Campbell completed his undergraduate degrees in Physiology (BSc 2004) and Medicine (MBChB 2006) at the University of Glasgow. He completed his Cardiology specialist training in the West of Scotland, during which time he undertook a PhD in heart failure research, supervised by professors John McMurray and Mark Petrie.

He initially worked as an NHS consultant cardiologist with specialist interest in cardiac imaging (cardiac MRI) and heart failure. He was the recipient of a Chief Science Officer NRS Career Researcher Fellowship in 2019. He joined the University of Glasgow as a Senior clinical lecturer and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in 2022.

Dr Campbell is an honorary consultant cardiologist at both the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow.

Research interests

Research Theme: Cardiac Diseases

Dr Campbell’s research interests are in the use of novel diuretics and combinations of diuretics in patients with heart failure. He was the co-chief investigator of a combined novel drug – device trial (Phase I) using a novel preparation of furosemide delivered by a bespoke subcutaneous pump. He is also co-chief investigator on two multicentre randomised controlled trials.

His other research interests include:

The use of cardiac MRI and the assessment of remodelling, particularly in the context of randomised controlled clinical trials.
The use of artificial intelligence to accelerate clinical workflow, particularly in investigations of patients with suspected heart failure.
