Summary

This course introduces students to the history of European sculpture from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. Ordered chronologically, every week covers one or more key artists, as well as the context in which their practice could flourish. Included are artists such as Donatello and Brancusi, as well as lesser-known figures such as Camille Claudel.   

This course aims to: 

• Provide an introduction to key European sculptors from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th by analysing key examples of these artists' works. 

• Place European sculptors within the broader social and artistic context or their respective periods 

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

• Identify historical, stylistic and cultural components of the artists and artworks covered, and the key debates surrounding them. 

• Analyse and interpret the major artworks covered in terms of their imagery, function, methods of production and stylistic and cultural components.
