Getting in the Christmas Spirit during exam season

Emily, an MSc Sociology student from the USA, shares her top tips for enjoying the holiday season in Glasgow, from embracing the Christmas spirit to balancing festivities with exam preparation.

It’s the end of November/beginning of December, and as a Sociology postgraduate student here at the University of Glasgow School of Social and Political Sciences, final assessments and exams are upon us. This is undoubtedly a stressful time for all of us, and it can be a bit dreary as well. But, in my opinion, this is actually one of the best times of the year here in Glasgow
I’m someone that loves the cold and moody weather, so it’s no wonder why I’ve ended up here in Scotland from New Jersey. But even though the beautiful autumnal colours are fading with the cold, making the walks through Kelvingrove park a tiny bit dull, the Christmas lights and festivities are here!
To hopefully help get you through your finals, or get into a festive spirit, here are some of the ways I’ve brightened up my days heading into winter and the Christmas season.

1. Appreciating the Free Festivities Around Glasgow’s West End
Walking through the West End this past weekend, on my way to the library I stumbled upon a Christmas tree lighting ceremony with little market stalls on Byres Road. It was such a welcome surprise, and I made a note to walk by later that night with friends to see the tree lit up! I always appreciate something small to look forward to after a productive day.
I also love to take any cute side streets when I get the chance, even if it makes my walk to uni a bit longer. If I’m heading to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub (JMS), I’ll always walk down Ashton Lane, one of the cutest spots in the West End, especially during the holidays.
There are also beautiful light displays and attractions in the city centre! If you hop on the subway or get a bus from campus, and get off at Buchanan Street, you will be surrounded with all the stores you could possibly need to shop for gifts.
A little further along you will find the Winter Wonderland Christmas Markets in St Enoch square! I also personally love the lights surrounding the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art.
2. Getting Cosy to Beat Those Winter Blues and Exam Stress!
I am one of the biggest advocates for any and all cosy activities during autumn and winter. Nothing beats making a warm cup of tea, lighting a candle, and warming up with a blanket and hot water bottle to survive the Glaswegian cold! Especially while studying.
Even grabbing a coffee at a little cafe between classes makes all the difference, and for those of us on a budget a coffee or tea to-go from home is always a good bet! My favourite coffee shops at the moment are SMUG Coffee Bar and Pavlova Bakery. And, when you’re on campus and wanting a nice coffee, some food, or a nice study spot I’d recommend The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club!

Get a coffe, enjoy the view and study!
3. Nothing Says Festive Quite Like a Good Meal!
One of my favourite things about Glasgow is the amazing food and lively pubs you will find all around. And even better if they are getting in the spirit!
A yummy sandwich to break up study sessions, a hot chocolate at the pub (a new, and maybe odd, joy of mine), or a nice meal with friends all make this season that much more special.
And remember to always check for student discounts!

4. Seeing More of Scotland at Christmas Time
If you find yourself with a day off from class, or have a day where you don’t have too much to do, I would highly recommend a little trip on Scotrail outside of Glasgow! One of my favourite things being here as an American is the ease of public transport and being able to get to another beautiful city so quickly!
The popular Edinburgh Christmas market, for example, make a great little day trip with a quick 45–50-minute journey (but make sure to get the express train).

5. Finally, Take Time for Yourself
I know the stress of finals can make it seem like you don’t have time for all of the holiday events but doing small things to make the cold season a little bit brighter and cosier makes all the difference!
Make sure to take care of yourself, and I promise you will absolutely find time for some of the Christmassy and fun things Glasgow has to offer! Whether it’s a walk through the lights, a festive study break, a nice night out to dinner and the pub, or a cosy Christmas movie night in, enjoy this season, and enjoy your studies!
