Dr Joao Almeida

  • Lecturer - Urban Studies and Social Policy (Urban Studies & Social Policy)

Biography

I am an interdisciplinary researcher working across critical and social theory, contemporary history, and social and public policy. My work explores the intersections between political thought, critical theory(ies) and societal change. A key example is my first monograph, The Sacralization of Time: Contemporary Affinities between Crisis and Fascism (Palgrave, 2020).

Over the past decade, I have taught at several UK higher education institutions, contributing to programmes in Sociology, Criminology, Public Policy, and Urban Studies. My teaching is informed by a commitment to critical pedagogy and theoretically-driven scholarship.

PhD Supervision Interests

I welcome inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in topics such as:

  • Contemporary and emerging forms of authoritarian governance and their influence on policymaking;
  • Decolonial and critical approaches to policymaking and the production of knowledge in policy studies;
  • The crisis of liberal governance across the North Atlantic region;
  • Alternative experiences of progressive social change and political resistance and their impact on regime transformation and policy landscapes.

If your research interests align with these areas, or intersect with broader themes in critical policy studies, please feel free to get in touch.
