Biography
Catriona Forrest is an award-winning Lecturer in Media and Communications, with a focus on innovation in journalism education and relationship-rich experiential learning.
Her work advances collaborative learning, peer mentorship, and real-world engagement, supporting collaborators and other stakeholders to develop ethical, critically informed media practices that extend beyond the classroom.
Catriona has a background in journalism and factual production, with decades of experience at the BBC and later as a freelancer. She is Head of Mentoring for Women in Journalism Scotland, leading a scheme which has seen over 100 up-and-coming journalists supported in their career development goals. A RET Fellow, she is a member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), BAFTA and the Association for Journalism Education and is an accredited trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network.
She leads the Masters in Media, Communications and International Journalism, a programme which combines the sociology of the Glasgow University Media Group with intensive training in an ethical journalism practice. Catriona has been teaching practical journalism methods on this programme since 2019, as well as developing and delivering training on media literacy and digital skills for a range of audiences including international academic and industry partners.
Catriona leads the University of Glasgow Journalism and Factual Storytelling Education Network (JASFEN).
Through her teaching, mentoring, and programme leadership, Catriona has built and sustained communities of emerging journalists, media and journalism scholars, practitioners, and academics.
Research interests
Catriona leads innovations in journalism education which can lead to an ethical application of media skills in a changing world. Her scholarship focuses on relationship-rich pedagogies, experiential learning, with a foundation of transnational and interdisciplinary solutions-based approaches.

Supervision
Since 2022 Catriona has led a team of academics and media industry practitioners who supervise the Practical Journalism Project, an experiential alternative to the Sociology Dissertation open to students on the MSc Media, Communications and International Journalism (MCIJ). She has supervised over 50 practical projects.
Catriona also supervises students on the Sociology Dissertation, which is the traditional 60-credit submission for the MCIJ programme.
