Biography

I am a graduate of the universities of London (BA from Bedford College; MA from the LSE) and Oxford (St Antony’s College; St John’s College, graduated with DPhil). I hold a higher doctorate (Habilitation) from the University of Marburg. I have taught at King’s College London at the Department of War Studies, and at the University of Reading, and have taught at or held visiting professorships at several Parisian universities, the universities of Reims and Potsdam, at Sciences Po’ Paris and Reims, at the University of Rome III, at the Bundeswehr University near Munich and at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s university MGIMO. I spent a year at NATO Headquarters as a Consultant/Intern, and have worked as Director of Studies of the German Bundeswehr’s military history research office. I have been affiliated to/currently serving on academic advisory boards of several research institutes, including the French Institute of International Affairs (IFRI), the Royal United Services Institute, Chatham House (RIIA), the German Institute for Contemporary History, and the French government’s strategic studies think tank IRSEM.

Research interests

War is at the centre of my research interests, with a particular focus on why people go to war and how they wage war, what means they choose (or reject) and what strategies, and how they justify them. I am especially known for my contribution to Strategic Studies. The “why” covers the multiple factors leading to war, including structural factors like the patterns of relations between groups of people (from terrorist bands to ethnic groups and nations and civilisations) and their representatives (governments, states, alliances, international organisations), what is traditionally called “international relations”. I am particularly interested in cultural factors, which include particular narratives of the past and how these are drawn upon to argue for particular policies and strategies for the present and future. My expertise lies mainly in Europe and the “West”, especially Britain, France, Germany, and the USA, but also touches on Russia.

My current research areas are in particular:

On a macro level: how do people (and have people in the past) thought of war, of who should fight, of whom they can fight, how, with what means, to what ends. Her research includes the role and evolution of the laws of war in this context. This project is sponsored by the Smith Richardson Foundation, an also the visiting professorships in Paris of 2017/2018.
On a more specific, policy-informing level: the political dimensions and impact of military exercises (an international project sponsored by NATO).
With a view to public outreach: the commemoration of particular battles for political purposes.
