A workshop addressing the themes of Russian language teaching & Slavonic studies within the Scottish education system and Russian & Slavonic studies and the UK education sector.

The issue of language and language training in the Scottish education system has emerged as a key issue during the course of the last 2-3 years both within the Higher Education and schools sectors. In response to this and given the central place of language learning to issues of ‘translating culture’, the networking initiative developed a workshop in tandem with one of its key collaborating partners, the Scotland-Russia Forum, which is based in Edinburgh. The workshop was held at the Scotland-Russia Institute, Edinburgh, 1pm-5pm, Monday 28th May, 2012.

The event comprised two sessions and addressed the themes of Russian language teaching & Slavonic studies within the Scottish education system and Russian & Slavonic studies and the UK education sector. Papers were delivered by a combination of academics and practitioners and the event was timed to coincide with the publication of a key Scottish government report on language learning in schools. The workshop was attended by more than 20 participants and included language practitioners, academics, postgraduates as well as representatives of the Russkiy Mir programme.
