A new Erasmus agreement for staff teaching mobility has been formalised, allowing two staff members from the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) to visit Glasgow and work with colleagues from the School.
Two members of staff from the Journalism School at JGU will visit for five days each over the next three years. This new agreement builds on an existing partnership with the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
The development has been led by Catriona Forrest, Programme Convenor of the MSc Media, Communications and International Journalism (MCIJ), who has been building this collaboration with the JGU following an initial invitation via the Deans of Global Engagement in 2023.
Catriona said: "This staff mobility delivers an enhanced international experience for our students, who will benefit from the German and European perspectives of our visiting colleagues, as well as their expertise in teaching journalism skills, methods and practice.
“JGU staff members successfully took part in our award-winning News Day at the Hunterian last year, and I am delighted that they will be here to support this experiential learning event again in 2026.
“I am grateful for the University-wide support we have had in building this collaboration and testing our ideas, and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us.“
Eamonn Butler McIntosh, Deputy Head of School & Director of Learning and Teaching, shared: “This is a great example of collaborative engagement, internationalisation and innovation coming together.“
Lukas Herzog, Lecturer at the JGU, said: "We sometimes forget that there are so many different perspectives when we just focus on our topic of research, or our country, or even our University or our School. So this exchange between different methods of teaching, different ways of thinking about problems, is really helpful. It is really important to have this cultural, intellectual exchange.”
The two incoming JGU staff members will be chosen on a rotating basis. They will teach, participate in workshops, support experiential learning events, and work together with colleagues on scholarship projects.
The Johannes Gutenberg University is a priority partner for the University of Glasgow. Exploratory staff mobility was funded by the Deans of Global Engagement, followed by an International Partnership Development (IPDF) Award, and SPSS student field trip funding.
