Professor Gerasimos Tsourapas, from the Division of Political and International Studies, recently completed a yearlong appointment as Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS), The American University in Cairo. Over the course of the year, he contributed to teaching, research, and policy dialogue on migration and mobility across the Middle East and beyond.
As part of his time at AUC, Professor Tsourapas delivered a well-attended public lecture in November 2024 on “Understanding the Logic of Migration Crises in the Mediterranean,” hosted by the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He also led seminars with students and closed-door faculty sessions on the politics of migration, designed to support international research and pedagogical collaboration.
In January 2025, he supported a visit to AUC by a delegation from the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences, including the Dean for Global Engagement (Middle East and North Africa) and the Deputy Head of College/Dean of External Engagement. Drawing on his longstanding ties to AUC, Professor Tsourapas provided strategic insights for deepening cooperation in research, mobility, and policy.
Following this visit, CMRS joined the Carnegie Corporation-funded project “Securitization without Security: How Migration is Shaping the Global Order”, co-led by Professors Tsourapas and Katrina Burgess (Fletcher School, Tufts University). The initiative brings together scholars from Glasgow and the Fletcher School to explore how European and U.S. migration policies are reshaping global peace and security.
