In an increasingly competitive environment, we received over 135 applications, our best recruitment round to date. The programme Directors are now in the process of shortlisting interview candidates with a view to welcoming the successful applicants into Cohort 4, in September 2022.

Meanwhile Cohorts 1 & 2 are undertaking their first round of professional skills training and by all reports they are thoroughly enjoying being back in on campus, for what is for some of them, their first time working together, in person.

In addition, our internship programme began with two of our students’ securing placements at the Institute for Creative Technologies, University of Southern California, and Koa Health, one of our existing industry partners.

In March, Programme director Prof Alessandro Vinciarelli and project supervisor Dr Jeff Dalton presented on social AI-related research topics at The European ChatBot & Conversational AI Summit, whilst the SOCIAL AI CDT team exhibit at the inaugural Scottish AI Summit. Prof Vinciarelli was also a key-note speaker at our industry partner, Furhat Robotics’, Social Robotics Conference in May.

We have welcomed several new supervisors, expanding the breadth of our social AI research pool into cutting-edge research areas such as animal-AI interactions [Drs Marwa Mahmoud & Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas (School of Computing Science) & Cassandra Sampaio Batista (School of Psychology)] and social AI-based approaches to sustainable living [Drs Martin Lages (School of Psychology) & Simone Stumpf (School of Computing Science)].

In parallel, we have broadened our industry-partner base to include Intel, Humatics srl and Nokia-Bell Labs demonstrating the continued recognition of the benefit of our multi-disciplinary approach and of the real-world relevance of our research, to external partners.

Case studies exemplifying collaborative value can be found on our website: https://socialcdt.org/partners/.
