The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Socially Intelligent Artificial Agents introduces External Engagement Manager Dr Maree Devine and welcomes 13 new doctoral students for 2020

Staff and existing students from the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Socially Intelligent Artificial Agents (SOCIAL AI CDT) recently welcomed a cohort of 13 new PhD students during an online induction event  on 21 September. The new students form the second cohort of researchers to be trained at the £4.9 million interdisciplinary CDT, one of 16 UKRI-funded AI CDTs across the UK.

During their first year, the students will undergo specialist training through 120 credits of taught courses. In years two to four, they will carry out PhD research and write up their results. Throughout their time as CDT students, they will be involved in a range of cohort activities, leadership and outreach events and student-led workshops, benefitting from the CDT’s collaboration and internship opportunities with 16 industrial partners. This includes unique links with the Scottish Graduate School for Social Sciences (SGSSS).

Dr Maree Devine joined the SOCIAL CDT programme in May as Doctoral Training Hub (DTH) External Engagement Manager and will work alongside SOCIAL AI’s existing team to raise the external profile of the SOCIAL AI CDT. In particular, she will look to facilitate the development of existing partnerships in addition to growing the AI ecosystem across other academic groups, as well as with new social and industrial enterprises.

The SOCIAL AI CDT is a collaboration between the School of Computing Science, the School of Psychology, the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology, the Adam Smith Business School, the School of Critical Studies, the School of Engineering, the Scottish Graduate School of the Social Sciences and 16 industrial partners (BRAIQ, Context-Scout, Dimensional Imaging, Dyson, FLASH Robotics, Furhat Robotics, Micro-phonics, Microsoft, Neurodata-Lab, PolyAI, Qumodo, Rakuten, Schlumberger, SICSA, Telefonica, The Data Lab).
