Biography

Wei’s interest in food security was initiated when she was studying a Bachelor of Agriculture in Jilin University, China. This was followed by a Master of Plant Nutrition research project, when her plant photobiology journey started. She managed to show the newly identified Blue-light Inhibitors of Cryptochromes (BICs) could inhibit the photobody formation of blue light photoreceptor Crytochrome2 (Science 2016). She was then awarded the CSC-University of Glasgow joint scholarship for her PhD and was the researcher Co-Investigator of a BBSRC grant for her Postdoctoral research, where she was the first to report the mechanism of phosphorylation of plant UV-B photoreceptor UVR8 (Nature Communications 2024). Wei currently holds a prestigious BBSRC Fellowship to lead her independent research program, aiming to apply UV-B signalling in Brassica crop improvement.

Research interests

As an intrinsic component of sunlight, UV-B has pivotal impacts on plant growth and development. The research focus is to investigate the mechanisms of the regulation of UV-B signalling and the application of UV-B signalling in Brassica crop improvement to provide novel solutions for food security in the changing climate.
