Biography
Before joining the University of Glasgow, I was an Associate Lecturer in Russian at the University of St Andrews and an MHRA Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. I received my PhD in Russian at the University of Exeter.
Research interests
I specialise in Russophone nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature and Eastern Orthodox cultures in transnational contexts, with a particular focus on cross-cultural exchange between Russophone and Anglophone worlds.
I am currently working on finishing my first monograph, Prophets and Profits: Russian Spirituality in the British Empire, 1850s–1920s, which examines narratives of Russian spiritual life produced in the British Empire between the 1850s and the 1920s. By analysing different forms of life‑writing – including translations of biographies, autobiographies, diaries, private letters, and original accounts of Russian life stories – through world literature approaches, the book reveals the under-examined role of spirituality in inter‑imperial contexts.
Alongside completing my first monograph, I am developing a new project, Russian Conservative Masculinities in the Nineteenth Century. Employing gender and postcolonial theory, the project will examine how Russian conservative thought was shaped by Orthodox constructions of masculinity, and will shed light not only on the broader tensions between dissenting conservatives and the Russian imperial state, but also on the more diverse and contested history of masculinity in the Russian intellectual and cultural tradition.
