Four postgraduate research students from the SMLC, along with a visiting postdoctoral researcher, were accepted into Harvard University’s prestigious Institute of World Literature (IWL) summer school, which took place this year in July at Harvard University.
As a newly affiliated institutional member of IWL through our Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation, SMLC now benefits from priority access to this highly competitive programme. While institutional members typically have up to two reserved places, we were exceptionally allocated four in this first year of our membership.
The IWL summer school is a major intellectual event in the field of Comparative and World Literature, held annually in rotating international locations. It offers a remarkably enriching experience, featuring advanced seminars led by some of the world’s leading scholars in the field. PhD students in the final stages of their dissertations, as well as early career postdoctoral researchers, were invited to apply. The Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation was pleased to offer two bursaries to support attendance costs.
In the end, we were fortunate that the IWL offered places to four of our colleagues—PhD students Rachel Eager, Keni Li, and Yunjing Ouyang, along with our Ukrainian visiting postdoctoral researcher, Yaroslava Kovalova—and generously waived registration fees for all four. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
