The latest in the Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation's WRITERS and their TRANSLATORS series featured the novels of the 2018 Nobel-prize winning Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, with two of her distinguished English translators, Jennifer Croft (USA) and Antonia Lloyd-Jones (UK)
In March 2025, the Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation hosted the latest in its WRITERS and their TRANSLATORS series. The 2018 Nobel-prize winning Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk was due to join online, but had to pull out late on, but the event went ahead with a captivating conversation, expertly chaired Elwira Grossman, with two of her distinguished English translators, Jennifer Croft (USA) and Antonia Lloyd-Jones (UK). Olga Tokarczuk is the author of more than 10 novels including 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead', and 'Flights'.
The event was hybrid, and as well as a full house attending in person, others joined virtually from all across the globe, such was the keen interest in this event, which helped showcase the popularity of the Centre's series. The discussion ranged widely from the process of becoming a translator, negotiations with different publishers and publication imperatives, and the thinking behind translation choices, particularly of dense and complex words and phrases in the original.
