Biography
Shauna is an Honorary Consultant in Periodontics, Senior Clinical Lecturer, Clinical Research Facility Lead and Lead for Undergraduate teaching in Periodontics. During undergraduate dental training in Glasgow, she completed an intercalated degree in immunology. These studies extended to an intercalated PhD examining the role of cytokines in inflammation. In 2011, she completed specialist training in Periodontics and the following year, commenced an Honorary Consultant Post in Periodontics, at the same time becoming the first dentist to be awarded the Scottish Funding Council’s Senior Clinical Research Fellowship. Currently, Shauna treats patients referred for specialist periodontal care; leads a research group focused on the local and systemic consequences of the immune response in the oral cavity; and trains undergraduate and postgraduate students, NHS hospital and University staff.
Research interests
Also investigating local and systemic consequences of the immune response in the oral cavity:
Jason Brown
PhD Student, University of West of Scotland
Investigating innate lymphoid cells in the oral cavity.
"Jason graduated from Durham University in 2014 with a BSc in Biomedical Science, before completing a MPhil at the Liverpool University Dental School the following academic year. In 2015 Jason started his PhD jointly at University of the West of Scotland and Glasgow University investigating the immune response in periodontitis"
Robert Reilly
Clinical Research Fellow, PhD Student
Leukocyte trafficking in the oral mucosa
"As a Dentist I am interested in identifying how the immune system works in the mouth. My research aims to identify the mechanisms that causes T-Cells to move to the mouth in health and disease. By understanding these mechanisms it may identify new treatments for a range of oral diseases."
Laura Cameron
PhD Student, Industrial PhD Partnership with Dentsply Sirona
Investigating the immune response after periodontal treatment
Michael Paterson
Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry, undertaking a research MSc investigating how treatment for gum disease affects the body as a whole.
Recent Group Members:
Jennifer Malcolm
Post-Doctorate Research assistant funded by Arthritis Research UK
Investigating the immune response to citrullinated antigen
"Jennifer graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a B.Sc (Hons) in Microbiology in 2008. Jennifer then moved to the Glasgow Dental School to undertake her PhD to investigating the relationship between salivary immune responses and the oral biofilm development in young children, which was awarded in 2013. Jennifer currently works at the Institute for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, investigating how post translational antigen modification alters the immune response."
Ana Adrados
Ana Adrados Planell graduated from Universitat Politècnica de València with a M.Eng. in Agricultural Engineering with intensification in Biotechnology and Breeding in 2010, and an M.Sc. in Biotechology in 2014. In 2011 Ana took up a position as a research assistant at the Institute of Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) to work with microarray technology of nucleic acids. In 2012, Ana moved to Glasgow to take up the Marie-Curie ITN-RAPID PhD studentship investigating the role of citrullination in the host response to periodontal infection and its relation to autoimmunity, in particular rheumatoid arthritis.

Lauren Campbell
Lauren graduated from the University of Strathclyde in June 2013 with First Class Honours in Biomedical Science. In September 2013, Lauren started the Sir Jules Thorn PhD studentship, at the Institute for Infection Immunity and Inflammation, investigating the T cells found in gingiva in health and disease.
