Biography

I graduated from the University of Glasgow Bachelor of Nursing with Honours and the McGirr Prize in 1987 and Master of Education in 1997.  I completed my PhD - using mixed methods and Q methodology to explore student nurses' perspectives on preserving dignity in care - at Edinburgh Napier University in 2018.

My clinical background is in general and cardiothoracic intensive care and I have a longstanding interest in how nurses learn in clinical practice.  I gained experience as a clinical educator and postgraduate certificates in further education and in open, distance and flexible learning before becoming a Practice Development Nurse in 2003.  In 2008 I moved into higher education as a Lecturer in Adult Health at the University of the West of Scotland.  I joined the Nursing and Health Care School at the University of Glasgow as a Lecturer in May 2018.  I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
