Biography

I am Director of Education in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing at the University of Glasgow, and Deputy Head of Anatomy. I am a Senior Lecturer on the Learning, Teaching and Scholarship career track with over 14 years’ experience teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in anatomy, life sciences, medicine, dentistry and nursing. My research background is in reproductiove biology, embryology and endocrinology.

My teaching and leadership focus on inclusive curriculum design, assessment and feedback, technology-enhanced learning, and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in anatomy education.  My work has contributed to sustained improvements in student experience, including sector-leading NSS outcomes and national programme rankings. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with an established profile in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, with peer-reviewed publications, edited volumes, and book chapters. I currently run several funded projects exploring digital anatomy education and EDI-informed curricula often working with students as partnerships.

I am also a Fellow of the Anatomical Society and member of their Education and EDI committees. I work with national and international partners and seam the Chair of the Scottish Anatomists Group. I am also active in publich engagement, with a keen interest in supporting individuals accessing science who would not typically see this as for them.

Research interests

My research interests sit at the intersection of anatomy education, inclusive curriculum design and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). I am particularly interested in how equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) can be meaningfully embedded within anatomy curricula, assessment and learning environments to enhance student engagement, belonging and learning outcomes.

A key strand of my work focuses on assessment and feedback practices, especially in large and diverse cohorts, exploring how transparent, authentic and inclusive assessment design can support student success while maintaining academic standards. I also have a strong interest in technology-enhanced learning, including digital and visual resources for teaching histology, embryology and other conceptually challenging areas of anatomy, and how these tools can support confidence and learning for a wide range of learners.

My research is strongly collaborative and often involves student–staff partnerships, valuing students as co-creators of educational practice and knowledge. Through this work, I aim to generate evidence-informed approaches that influence teaching practice locally, nationally and internationally, and contribute to more inclusive and effective anatomy and health sciences education.

Teaching

I coordinate courses and teach broadly across Anatomy with a focus on embryology, histology and diversity in anatomy. I have a passion for how we can improve the student experience through interventions like a local prayer and quiet room as well as embedding EDI into the curricula to normalise diversity and inclusion. I also have expeience in curricula redesign, teaching and assessment at scale for over 600 students, embedding technology to enhance learning and working with students as partners in these changes.

My teaching practice is student-centred, inclusive and research-informed, with a strong focus on creating supportive learning environments that enhance engagement, confidence and academic success. I teach anatomy, histology and embryology across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, using a range of approaches including lectures, laboratories, tutorials and technology-enhanced learning. I place particular emphasis on clear communication, authentic assessment and timely, developmental feedback.

I have coordinated or co-led a wide range of courses, including BSc Anatomy (hons) courses and programmes such as Diverse Anatomy, Problems in Human Reproduction, and Core Skills for Modern Anatomists as well as Anatomy for Nursing (Years 1 and 2), and the postgraduate course Endocrinology in Health and Disease. In these roles, I have led curriculum development, assessment redesign and quality assurance, working closely with colleagues and students as partners.

My approach is underpinned by a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to supporting both student wellbeing and staff development through collegial, reflective teaching practice.
