Research interests

Biography

Marta Czesnikiewicz-Guzik is an academic dentist with an interest in dental research and clinical care. She graduated with a BDS (Hons) from Jagiellonian University. She pursued her professional development receiving specialist training in dental surgery and performing research in clinical microbiology for her PhD defended with honours at Jagiellonian University. In 2004, she commenced her post-doctoral training at the “Lowance Centre for Human Immunology”, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA. After returning in 2008 from her post-doctoral fellowship she worked both in general dental practice and dental university clinic delivering teaching in prosthodontics, integrated dentistry, oral surgery and evidenced based dentistry. She defended her habilitation thesis in 2012 becoming associate-professor at the Jagiellonian University. Since 2013, she teaches periodontology at the Dental School of Glasgow University working on her research at the same time. She continues her clinical skills development with an particular interest in microsurgery of the periodontium. At the same time, she is an editor of an evidence-based dentistry journal and an associate editor of the “Journal of Stomatology”, which is the main journal of the Polish Dental Society. She is the member of Polish Dental Society, British Periodontal Society and International Association for Dental Research.

Research Interests

Dr Czesnikiewicz-Guzik has been carrying out her research in the fields of the oral microbiology and immunology. Currently, her main interest is the role of inflammation in the oral cavity on the systemic immune system activation and the consequences of this activation for the general health status. She is particularly interested in the role of chronic periodontitis in the development of endothelial dysfunction and hypertension.

She has pursed as well variety of project including:

The role of the colonization of the oral cavity with Helicobacter pylori for the infection and the reinfection of the stomach,
Expression and activation of NADPH oxidases in oral cancers and the importance of these parameters for immunoregulation.
The use of melatonin as a potential therapeutic agent for inflammation of oral mucosa and post-extraction inflammatory complication
Characterization of oral mucosa changes in children suffering from acute leukaemia.
Characterization of the aging effects on phenotypes of CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes and functional importance of these changes.
The role of zinc and metallothionein in the regulation of lymphocyte activation.
