Biography

After gaining a BSc (hons) from the University of Aberdeen in Neuroscience, Emma completed a PhD in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh specialising in the etiology of subcortical small vessel stroke and vascular dementia. The project looked to highlight blood brain barrier dysfunction as a cause of stroke and assessed the relevance of available experimental models to clinical conditions of the subcortical brain.

She then transferred her knowledge into cardiovascular research at Imperial College London under a British Heart Foundation programme grant. As a Research Associate in the Department of Bioengineering she collaborated with Aeronautical Engineers to look at how the frictional force of blood (shear stress) on the vessel wall influenced the spatial development of Atherosclerosis in large artery networks.
