Biography

Biography

Dr Douglas Robertson is a SeniorClinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative dentistry.  He graduated with a BDS (Hons) from the University of Glasgow in 2002 winning the Cullen medal and the Lord Provosts prize for Clinical Dentistry.  He passed his Intercollegiate Speciality Fellowship Exam in November 2013 and was awarded his CCST (Certificate of completion of specialist training) in restorative dentistry in April 2014. 

He completed his membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004 winning the Deans medal for the highest over all mark in the examination.  Dr Robertson has worked both in general dental practice and in junior hospital positions including Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative dentistry.  He subsequently worked in the School for Dental Care Professionals, delivering teaching and developing the curriculum of the BSc in oral health science.  During this time, he completed a certificate in Academic Practice and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  Douglas was also engaged in committee work as a dental representative for the British Dental Association and British Medical Association.  

Dr Robertson completed his PhD in 2011 with a thesis entitled “The oral complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus in a non-smoking population” for which he was awarded the Sir Wilfred Fish prize by the British Society of Periodontology.   His research interests include the microbiology and immunology of periodontal disease, oral candidiasis and dental abscesses and applications of robotic technology to dentistry.  He was a joint holder of a BBSRC grant investigating the candidal biofilm in denture stomatitis.  Dr Robertson’s clinical teaching commitments include endodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics and he is the teaching lead in Fixed prosthdontics as part of the undergraduate BDS curriculum.  He is also involved in the running of the MSc in Endodontics.  In addition he was the programme lead for Periodontology in the MSc in primary dental care. Dr Robertson has presented at vocational training courses as well as local, national and international scientific meetings.

Research Interests

Dr Robertson has continued to work in the field of clinical dental research since joining the department. The two areas of the work undertaken within Glasgow Dental School and through international collaborations are (1) the relationships between oral and systemic disease including periodontal disease and (2) the treatment and resistance of microbial biofilms in prosthodontics (3) Antibiotic stewardship in dentistry (4) Application of navigational and robotic technologies to dentistry. 

Working in the Infection and Immunity research group Dr Robertson is actively involved in collaborative projects with GlaxoSmithKline and other Academic partners to understand the role of the oral microbiome in health and disease.  Clinical samples acquired in human studies have also been used in in-vitro mechanistic studies supporting Masters and PhD student research.
