Biography

Anne Rowat is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, University of Glasgow. She has held clinical nurse posts in NHS Lothian and academic posts at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier University. She completed her PhD in 2000, which  explored physiological monitoring in the acute phase of stroke.

Her career in nurse education is informed by national and international experience as a lecturer, which has enabled her to develop teaching courses across a range of pre- and post-registration nursing, health and social care on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Key areas of teaching are the care of individuals with long term conditions, neurology, research methods, ethics and clinical skills.

She was awarded Senior Fellowship of Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in 2017.

Research interests

Research interests include the management of post stroke complications to improve patient outcomes, experiences of care and reduce avoidable harm. This includes projects to determine the frequency of dehydration and renal problems after stroke.

Recent research aims to address the need for integrated approaches to supporting patients and carers with the long-term consequences of stroke. This has included studies aimed to help patients self-manage their condition and provide peer-support for exercise after stroke.

As a member of the Scottish Stroke Nurse Forum she has led on research projects to define the research agenda specific to stroke nursing.
