Glasgow University Commercial Awareness Society

Glasgow University Commercial Awareness Society (GUCAS) The Glasgow University Commercial Awareness Society (GUCAS) works to increase our member’s commercial awareness, an essential skill that the vast majority of law firms want their trainees and lawyers to be able to confidently demonstrate.

Commercial awareness has no exact definition but can be thought of as the ability to advise your clients on how to manage their commercial risk, through legal means. This can be achieved through a combination of understanding how law firms and their clients both operate and make money, as well as understanding what your role will be as you progress from trainee to solicitor and beyond. Strong commercial awareness needs regular practice to develop, but it is a hugely important skill for anyone looking to practice any strand of law, particularly commercial law.

GUCAS will help you develop and demonstrate your commercial awareness. We are open to students from any degree discipline with an interest in how businesses and markets operate. We host presentations and workshops with law firms and leading commercial awareness experts such as Jake Schogger, Christopher Stoakes, and Peter Watson, that will introduce you to subjects such as networking, negotiation, and commercial awareness. We post analysis of current events regularly on our Instagram and LinkedIn pages. We email a monthly newsletter to our members, breaking down some of the most important news events in the previous month while explaining their commercial impact. On our Facebook page, you will find events open exclusively for our members, such as our Intra University Negotiating Competition, or workshops with employers.
