Mohamad is a lecturer at the School of Law and teaches mainly in the areas of public international law. He has extensive research and teaching profile in International Law related topics. He holds a PhD in International Law from the University of Aberdeen (2015) on ‘The Legal Regime Applicable to Private Military/ Security Company Personnel in Armed Conflicts’. He has also gained specialist qualifications in international law, including a Diploma in Rapid Expert Assistance and Co-operation Teams for Conflict Prevention, Crisis Management from International University Centre for Peace Missions- Helsinki Spaña and Escuela de Organización (Spain) 2015.

Mohamad has held different academic positions at various universities, including Dundee as a visiting lecturer where he taught international criminal law, Glasgow where he taught UN law and supervised LLM projects. He was also a visiting researcher at the University of Strathclyde to conduct a research project on the ‘Legal implications arising from the use of Artificial Intelligence by private and security companies’. This project formed the basis of a conference paper on ‘Determining the Legal status of Private Military Security Companies’ Personnel using Artificial Intelligence in Armed Conflicts: The Maven Project as a Case Study’ to be presented to Aberdeen University Conference.

Mohamad is also a Teaching Fellow at the Centre for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh, where he designed and delivered an International Law course from scratch. The course covers a vast range of international law topics, including human rights law, UN law, international criminal law, international environmental law, the use of force, international migration law, and terrorism.  

Mohamad has research experience in a wide range of law topics, including International Law, International Security and Peace, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law, International Organisations, International Migration Law, and International Environmental Law. As well as having research interests in central, fundamental areas of international law, Mohamad also has interests in fields at the cutting-edge of international law such as technology and cyber operations.

One of his latest publications that International Criminal Law Review has just published concerning ‘UN Efforts to Make ISIS Accountable for International Crimes: the Challenges Posed by Iraq’s Domestic Law’. 

He has just finished writing a paper on ‘International Criminal Responsibility arising from the Use of Autonomous weapons in Armed conflicts’, submitted to the International Law and Technology Interoperability Association;

He is currently exploring Determining the Legal status of Private Military Security Companies’ Personnel using Artificial Intelligence in Armed Conflicts: The Maven Project as a Case Study’;

He is also drafting an article entitled ‘ISIS Fighters and their Families: Whom Responsibility? An International Humanitarian Law Question’.

Mohamad is working with Ms Therese O'Donnell. A reader at the University of Strathclyde on a co-authored paper concerning ‘Prohibition of the Use of Force by Non-state Actors’.
