The Emma Ritch Law Clinic
The Emma Ritch Law Clinic is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, which provides independent legal advice and representation to complainers in sexual offences cases via a specially constituted law firm. The clinic's vision is an accessible and fair Scottish criminal justice system that treats complainers in criminal cases with dignity and respect; and recognises their legal rights. The clinic accepts referrals in relevant cases from Rape Crisis Scotland’s National Advocacy Project and other Violence against Women and Girls charities. It addresses a significant unmet legal need in Scotland and provides students with a unique insight into the reality of legal practice and the operation of the criminal justice system. Eamon Keane, a member of the criminal law subject area, co-founded the clinic and co-directs the project (with Professors Kinghan and Busby), and acts as the Principal Solicitor. The clinic is part of the Law School’s Go Justice Centre. It is named in memory of Emma Ritch, who was a pioneering Scottish women's rights campaigner that sadly passed away in 2021.
