ILGSPD Annual Lecture: Is the United Nations’ Humanitarian Work Still Relevant?

The inaugural Annual Lecture of the Erasmus Mundus Master in International Law of Global Security, Peace and Development (ILGSPD) will be delivered by Jamie McGoldrick (former UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Palestine, Nepal and Georgia) on 29 November 2022.

The global humanitarian system is under immense pressure due to the complexity and magnitude of today’s global challenges ranging from protracted armed conflicts to climate change. According to the UN, a record 303 million people currently need humanitarian aid amidst calls for humanitarian reforms. In the ILGSPD Annual Lecture, drawing on his decades-long experience in the humanitarian sector, Mr McGoldrick will offer insights on the current challenges to and future prospects for the humanitarian world with a particular focus on the United Nations’ humanitarian work.

About the Speaker 

Jamie McGoldrick has extensive experience and expertise in the humanitarian sector. He was the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Palestine, Nepal and Georgia, as well as the Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. 

Previously, Mr Goldrick held numerous positions with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Save the Children in his long humanitarian career. 

He began his career as a news producer and researcher in the broadcasting industry, and has worked for the BBC, Sky TV, Channel 4 and Middle East Broadcasting. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs, Fordham University.

The Erasmus Mundus Master in International Law of Global Security, Peace and Development (ILGSPD) is a collaborative and multidisciplinary degree delivered by the University of Glasgow, Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), the University of Tartu, Radboud University, Leuphana University of Luneburg, and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).  

ILGSPD is designed to train the next generation of lawyers and policy-makers with the ability to navigate the political context of international law, and the comprehensive knowledge needed to engage with the issues of global security, peace and development. It is funded by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree.
