Vanessa has more than 15 years of experience in veterinary pathology, she is a board-certified pathologist (Dipl. ECVP) since 2015 and publications she co-authored have more than 2300 citations in internationally reviewed journals in March 2023.
Research interests
Fascinated by how a virus infection shapes tissue-specific and systemic inflammation, my work focuses on how host-specific immune reactions contribute to a mild versus a severe clinical outcome and eventually to death. To address this, I study disease pathogenesis in vivo by applying various approaches including animal studies (rodent and large animal models) with clinical scoring, gross and histo-pathology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence (confocal microscopy), light sheet microscopy, software-assisted image analysis of whole scanned slides (bright field and IF), in situ-hybridisation, cytokine measurements using the Luminex system, ex vivo systems like 2D and 3D cell culture systems in BSL2 (Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus) and BSL3 (Bluetongue virus and SARS CoV-2). For multiplexing markers in FFPE tissue the PhenoCycler (Akoya) is used in our lab. We apply spatial transcriptomics using the Nanostring technology to understand disease pathogenesis. To identify mechanisms, which are conserved in mammalian speices, I study humans, mice, hamsters and sheep.
