Biography
I initially graduated with an MRes in Neurosciences and Neuropharmacology at the University of Bordeaux in France (1999). I then studied neuroendocrinology and molecular biology during my PhD with Prof Jan Veenstra at the same institution. My PhD thesis involved the biochemical isolation, characterisation and molecular genetics analysis of several Drosophila melanogaster neuropeptides.
After completing my PhD in 2003, I moved to the University of Glasgow and joined Profs Julian Dow and Shireen Davies's laboratory to pursue my interest in Drosophila molecular genetics of neuropeptide signalling. I have continuously been funded by BBSRC, initially as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant, then Research Associate (2007) and as a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow with Researcher Co-Investigator status (2013-2020). In 2020, I moved to Prof Alain Kohl and Dr Emilie Pondeville’s group at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research.
Research interests
The Bunyaviridae is a large order comprising hundreds of viruses able to infect a broad range of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Some members of this order are re-emerging etiological agents and recognized as posing an increasing threat to human health (e.g., encephalitis and haemorrhagic fever), and to livestock animals (e.g., foetal abnormalities and abortions). Most Bunyaviridae viruses are transmitted by arthropod vectors and Aedes mosquitoes are the main vectors for arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), including Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV).
Our research focuses on better characterising the fundamental processes governing the immune responses of mosquitoes to arboviruses. We aim to understand how arbovirus infection affects the physiology of mosquito vectors by deciphering BUNV and RVFV replication, dissemination, and transmission in Aedes aegypti. Ultimately, these studies will increase our understanding of vector competence and facilitate the development of novel control strategies.
Prior to joining the group of Prof Alain Kohl and Dr Emilie Pondeville at the CVR, my research focuses on the central role of neuropeptides and their G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the physiology and behaviour of insects. Using molecular genetic techniques, functional genomics, and insect physiology, my research has contributed to the identification and characterisation of novel insect neurohormones and the use of neuropeptide GPCR as a target for the development of insect-control agents against agriculturally and biomedically relevant pest species.
