Biography

I am currently a Professor of Cardiovascular Immunology at the University of Glasgow (UK) at the School of Infection & Immunity. I also serve as the School’s International Lead and co-lead of the ARUA/Guild Africa-Europe CoRE in Non-Communicable Diseases & Multimorbidity.

I am an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the British Pharmacological Society, and the European Society of Cardiology.

I serve as Vice-President and Chair of the Engagement Committee of the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), as Chair of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) Immunopharmacology Committee, and as a Nucleus Member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Working Group on Atherosclerosis & Vascular Biology. I also serve on the Executive Committee of the British Atherosclerosis Society (BAS), on the Fellowship Committee of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), and as Vice-Chair of the Heart Research UK (HRUK) Translational Research Medical Review Panel.

I am a Deputy Editor of Cardiovascular Research, Associate Editor of Pharmacological Research, Editor in Chief of Frontiers for Young Minds (Human Health Section), and Editorial Board Member of several journals including ATVB and Scientific Reports.

I have a major interest in the immune response in cardiovascular disease. Current research activities address the study, imaging, and targeting of cellular and molecular immune mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure. I have authored around 120 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Reviews Immunology, Nature Reviews Cardiology, Immunity, European Heart Journal, Circulation, Circulation Research, Blood, and JCI.

Research interests

My major interest is the immune response in cardiovascular diseases. Current research activities address the study, imaging, and targeting of immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure.

Immune responses play a key role in cardiovascular diseases (Eur Heart J. 2019). We have developed techniques to track antigen-presenting cells and antigen presentation in the development of vascular immune response (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012; Circulation 2014; Cardiovasc Res. 2020). We have been amongst the first to apply multiphoton microscopy in experimental atherosclerosis (Circulation 2007) and stroke (Stroke 2011) to define the kinetics and anatomical location of the T cell-antigen presenting cell interactions that underlie vascular immune response in real-time in vivo (Immunity 2015). We have developed surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for multiplexing molecular imaging of vascular inflammation (Theranostics 2018). The ultimate goal is to develop new modalities for imaging vascular inflammation and deliver immuno-modulatory treatments directly to the vessel wall (ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2020). More recently, we contributed to the elucidation of immune mechanisms in hypertension (Circ Res. 2020; Circulation 2020; Nat Genet. 2021; JCI 2022; Eur Heart J. 2023; Nat Rev Cardiol. 2024) and heart failure (Cardiovasc Res. 2022; Eur J Heart Failure 2023).

My research programme has been well-funded externally by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the European Commission, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Global Challenges Research Funds, Medical Research Scotland (MRS), Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (MUR), and Canon Medical Systems.

Teaching

Since 2014, I have been Programme and/or Course Coordinator of the Senior Honours Immunology degree. The BSc (Hons) degree programme in Immunology has been running for over forty years. It was the first BSc Honours course in Immunology in Britain and continues to provide one of the most comprehensive undergraduate education in immunology in the country.

In addition to contributing to teaching for 2Y and 3Y Immunology, 1Y Medicine, 3Y Pharmacology, BMedSci in Inflammation Medicine, MVLS Research Training courses and MSc Infection Biology and Immunology, I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy actively involved in the organization and delivery of self-funded national and international teaching and learning events such as the Spring School in Transferable Skills for students of the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and the Integrated Mammalian Biology in vivo Immunology summer school.

I have been the External Examiner of the intercalated BMedSci degree course in Molecular Therapeutics at Barts & the London School of Medicine & Dentistry, and the recipient of the MVLS College Teaching Excellence Award.
