Biography
I am currently a Professor of Cardiovascular Immunology at the University of Glasgow (UK) within the School of Infection & Immunity. Additionally, I serve as the School’s International Lead and co-lead of the ARUA/Guild Africa-Europe CoRE in Non-Communicable Diseases & Multimorbidity.
I am an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the British Pharmacological Society, and the European Society of Cardiology.
I am the Vice-President and Chair of the Engagement Committee for the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), Chair of the Immunopharmacology Committee for the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR), and Chair of the Translational Research Medical Review Panel for Heart Research UK (HRUK). Additionally, I am a Nucleus Member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Working Group on Atherosclerosis & Vascular Biology and serve on the Executive Committee of the British Atherosclerosis Society (BAS). I am also part of the Fellowship Committee of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Immunotherapy Committee of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS).
I am the Deputy Editor of Cardiovascular Research, Associate Editor of Pharmacological Research, and Editor-in-Chief of the Human Health Section of Frontiers for Young Minds. Additionally, I serve on the editorial boards of several journals, including Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) and Scientific Reports.
I have a strong interest in the role of the immune response in cardiovascular diseases. My research encompasses both basic and clinical studies, with a focus on understanding and targeting immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure. I have published over 130 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Reviews Immunology, Nature Reviews Cardiology, Lancet Global Health, Immunity, European Heart Journal, Circulation, and Circulation Research.
Research interests
My primary interest is the immune response in cardiovascular diseases. My current research activities span from basic to clinical research, focusing on the study and targeting of immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure.
Immune responses are crucial in cardiovascular diseases (Nat Rev Cardiol. 2024). Initially, we developed methods to track antigen-presenting cells and their role in vascular immune response development (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012; Circulation 2014; Cardiovasc Res. 2020). We were among the pioneers in using multiphoton microscopy for experimental atherosclerosis (Circulation 2007) to observe real-time in vivo interactions between T cells and antigen-presenting cells, elucidating the dynamics and location of these interactions (Immunity 2015). Recently, we have shed light on immune mechanisms in hypertension (Circ Res. 2020; Circulation 2020; Nat Genet. 2021; JCI 2022; Eur Heart J. 2023; Nat Rev Cardiol. 2024) and heart failure (Cardiovasc Res. 2022; Eur J Heart Failure 2023), and are currently investigating immunometabolism in atherosclerosis (Nat Rev Cardiol. 2024). Our translational and clinical research aims to understand the relationship between inflammation, infection, and cardiovascular diseases, with a particular emphasis on Africa (Lancet Glob Health. 2024; Circ Res. 2024; Cardiovasc Res. 2024).
My research programme has received substantial external funding from various organizations, including the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the European Commission, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Global Challenges Research Funds, Medical Research Scotland (MRS), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (MUR), as well as various industry partners.

Teaching
Since 2014, I have served as Programme and/or Course Coordinator for the Senior Honours Immunology degree. The BSc (Hons) degree programme in Immunology, which has been running for over forty years, was the first of its kind in Britain. It continues to offer one of the most comprehensive undergraduate educations in immunology in the country.
In addition to teaching 2Y and 3Y Immunology, 1Y Medicine, 3Y Pharmacology, the BMedSci in Inflammation Medicine, MVLS College Research Training courses, and the MSc in Infection Biology and Immunology, I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Naples Federico II. I actively engage in organizing and delivering national and international teaching and learning activities, including the Spring School in Transferable Skills from the AURORA European University Alliance.
I have served as the External Examiner for the intercalated BMedSci degree course in Molecular Therapeutics at Barts & the London School of Medicine & Dentistry. Additionally, I have been honored with the MVLS College Teaching Excellence Award and received a nomination for Best MVLS College Teacher.
