Dr Faizan Fazal is a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow with a strong interest in clinical and translational research, particularly in immunology, inflammatory disease and rheumatology. He completed his MBBS in Pakistan. from Rawalpindi Medical University, and has developed extensive research experience alongside his clinical career. Dr Faizan has also completed MRCP (UK) part 1 and MRCP (UK) part 2 written exams.
Dr Faizan has more than 40 research publications to his name and is currently working on a number of research projects.
His research background includes clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, observational research, survival analysis and outcomes-based research. He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations across a range of medical specialties, with an increasing focus on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and translational medicine.
At the University of Glasgow, he is involved in rheumatology research examining inflammatory arthritis and the biological mechanisms underlying disease activity and treatment response. His work includes patient recruitment, clinical assessment, biospecimen collection and participation in translational research studies linking clinical phenotypes with immunological and molecular data.
He is particularly interested in developing research that bridges clinical medicine and laboratory science, with the aim of improving disease stratification, treatment selection and patient outcomes.
Research interests
Dr Fazal’s research interests centre on immunology, inflammatory disease and translational clinical research. He is particularly interested in understanding the immune mechanisms that drive chronic inflammatory conditions and how these mechanisms influence disease phenotype, progression and response to therapy.
His current interests include rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, immune-mediated inflammatory disease, biologic therapies, biomarkers of treatment response, synovial tissue research and precision medicine. He is also interested in the integration of clinical data with laboratory, molecular and bioinformatic approaches to identify predictors of disease behaviour and therapeutic response.
More broadly, his research interests include clinical epidemiology, evidence synthesis, patient outcomes, digital health and the application of data-driven methods to improve clinical decision-making.

Teaching
Dr Fazal has a strong interest in medical education and peer-assisted learning. He has experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate medical students, with particular interests in clinical medicine, research methodology and evidence-based practice. He founded and led a peer-assisted learning programme involving around 70 medical students over a 13-month period, providing structured academic support and encouraging student engagement in research and scholarly activity.
He has also been involved in journal clubs and research-focused teaching, helping students develop skills in critical appraisal, scientific writing and interpretation of medical literature. His teaching approach emphasises practical understanding, active participation and supporting trainees in developing both clinical and academic confidence.
