Dr Christopher Moxon
- Clinical Senior Lecturer (Parasitology)
Chris Moxon is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology, University of Glasgow and an honorary consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the Royal Hospital for Children. He obtained his medical degree from St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London and a BSc in Developmental Neurobiology at King’s College. After gaining membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics, his Liverpool-Wellcome Trust clinical PhD fellowship, focused on the role of coagulation in cerebral malaria at Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Clinical Research Programme. Then as a clinical lecturer in Liverpool while training in paediatric infectious diseases his research took a more basic approach, to understand the mechanisms of his PhD observations: developing in vitro methods and using laser capture microdissection to examine specific cell populations using transcriptomics in patient samples. This included a period as a visiting scientist at Havard Medical School/ Brigham and Women's Centre for Excellence in Vascular Biology in the Garcia-Cardeña lab, funded by a Wellcome Trust Seed Award. Having moved to University of Glasgow in September his work will interface between primary examination of host:pathogen interactions in patient samples in Blantyre Malawi (largely in post-mortem tissue) and mechanistic examination in the lab; both leveraging multi-modal technologies available at the WCMP/ UoG. These will examine mechanisms of transmission and pathogenesis – with a particular focus on understanding brain swelling in cerebral malaria with view to identifying treatment targets.
I focus on cerebral malaria pathogenesis and host:pathogen interactions in malaria using multi-model technologies. In particular I am interested in brain swelling in cerebral malaria with view to identifying treatment targets.
