  • Location: Common Room, Sir Graeme Davies Building

Titles:

Dr Gavin Blackburn: Proteomics, Metabolomics and Lipidomics at the Shared Research Facilities

Dr Phil Whitfield: Introduction to the MVLS Shared Research Facilities

Synopses:

Dr Gavin Blackburn: Gavin will discuss the mass spectrometry facilities available at the Shared Research Facilities, highlighting the available methods and how these can be applied to enhance your research. He will discuss some recent, past work carried out within the facility and will host an open discussion around how his group can support research for bacteriologists now and in the future.

Dr Phil Whitfield: The MVLS Shared Research Facilities (SRF) offers access to cutting-edge technologies and technical expertise to support the activities of researchers at all levels as well providing training opportunities. Our facilities encompass next generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, biophysical characterisation, protein purification. light and electron microscopy, flow cytometry, histology, whole body imaging and research software engineering. We would be delighted to work with you to meet your specific research requirements.

Bios:

Dr Gavin Blackburn: Gavin Blackburn is an analytical Chemist who has over 15 years experience working the the ‘omics space with mass spectrometry. After completing his PhD in breath analysis for early lung cancer detection his first post-doc was as a SULSA technologist running the metabolomics facility at Strathclyde. He then moved to Glasgow Polyomics as a bioinformatician and recently took over as Technical Lead for Mass Spectrometry at the MVLS-SRF. He’s keen to learn how his team can support groups in every area of biological research across the university and beyond.

Dr Phil Whitfield: Phillip Whitfield is the Director of the MVLS Shared Research Facilities. Following a BSc at the University of Sheffield and PhD at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London he worked as a Hunter’s Hope Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Adelaide Children’s Hospital. He continued his work at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge before being appointed as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool.
