Biography
On returning to Scotland in 2015 I was determined to address gaps in my knowledge of Scottish history which I had not been able to pursue during my career in regional economic development and public policy. This, and an interest in family history, led me first to an excellent, year-long continuing education course with the University of Glasgow, 'War, Reformation and Union, 1500-1707' and then onto a research MPhil on 'Scots Emigrants to East New Jersey in the 1680s', building on research I had already started.
This research has adopted a prosopographical approach, seeking to learn more about the several hundred emigrants, their kin and associates, to illuminate their motivations in leaving Scotland and assess what became of them. I have developed a website and genealogical database, East Jersey Bound which contains over 500 emigrants and 2,000 others. I continue to pursue research leads and add content to the website. I am collaborating with Joseph Wagner of the University of St Thomas, Minnesota.
