Early Chapels

SERF has begun to explore the less well-known remains of the early chapels at Exmagirdle and Muckersie. In due course it is planned to examine all the medieval churches within the study area. This earliest phase of Christianity is not well documented on mainland Scotland and chapels like Exmagirdle and Muckersie may well provide a key to understanding this transitional period.  The early development of the Church in Scotland also went hand in hand with political development and power networks and therefore these sites are significant in the wider evolution of the area in the medieval period.
