Biography

Professor Liam Dorris leads a clinical-research team from his NHS post as a paediatric neuropsychologist at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) in Glasgow, which is a leading university teaching hospital.  His team provide clinical placements for clinical psychology trainees, and research supervision for a range of degree programmes.

Liam was awarded a prestigious Fellowship of the British Psychological Society (BPS) in 2017, and is a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology, Chair of the awards committee of the BPS Division of Neuropsychology, and former Chair of the BPS Faculty of Paediatric Neuropsychology (2013-2016).

Liam has extensive involvement in teaching, training and research within paediatric neuropsychology, he is the external examiner for the BPS Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology (QiCN), former external examiner for the paediatric neuropsychology programme at the Institute of Child Health, UCL (2011-2015), and the DClinPsy programme at Lancaster University.

Liam was a non-executive board member of Epilepsy Scotland, a leading charity providing a range of services for people with epilepsy, and also served as a member of the finance sub-committee (2010-2019). His research has been funded by the National Institute of Health Research HTA programme, Glasgow Childrens Hospital Charity, Epilepsy Research UK, and a range of industry partners.

Research interests

Liam has almost 25 years clinical experience in the assessment and therapeutic support of children and young people with neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders. His key research collaborators within RHC are Professor Sameer Zuberi, Dr Andreas Brunklaus and Dr Joe Symonds who have a leading international profile in the delineation of the molecular genetic basis of childhood epilepsies. They have together formed the paediatric neurosciences research group hosted within the Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Liam also has strong links within MHW, particularly in the area of traumatic brain injury with Professor Tom McMillan, and with Professor Jon Evans in relation to the MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology programme, and to the DClinPsy programme.

Epilepsy

I am interested in understanding the cognitive, emotional and psychosocial impacts on children and young people of both common epilepsies (i.e. those with less clear cognitive comorbidities), and also the more developmentally disruptive epilepsies that can lead to severe limitations for young people and their families. My previous research into accelerated forgetting in childhood epilepsy, has been influential in considering educational supports. I supported the development of a UK epilepsy psychosocial research network which enabled the delivery of a successful multi-site RCT psychosocial group intervention, PIE study, which is now widely used across the UK.

Within my role as neurodevelopmental lead within the paediatric neurosciences research group, we are currently running several major studies in epilepsy including:

  • GACE study: A prospective population level study describing child development and family functioning in infants with newly diagnosed epilepsy.
  • Horizon SCN1a study: A natural history study of dravet syndrome which will provide deep phenotyping of a large UK cohort that could inform the delivery of future gene therapies.

Brain injury

My team has provided important research and teaching (Brain Injury Chapter) on a range of paediatric brain injuries. We are interested in how brain injuries can profoundly impact on young people during key periods in development, and how psychological interventions might improve adjustment, quality of life and mitigate more severe mental health issues across the lifespan.

We recently started a neuropsychology fund with the Glasgow Childrens Hospitals Charity to raise funds to be used to promote social integration activities for survivors of severe brain injury.

Developmental neurotoxicity

We have recently published a chapter on this subject in the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Behavioral Neuroscience (neurotoxicity chapter) and led on a highly influential international trial examining the neurodevelopmental consequences of neonatal anesthesia, resulting in changes to EMA and FDA guidance and several publications in the Lancet (GAS trial).

Other research interests

I have also published a range of studies more widely within child mental health and across a range of conditions, and have expertise in quantitative and qualitative approaches to psychological research. We have recently conducted a very large study (n=4,545) of cognitive empathy in partnership with the Glasgow Science Centre, and had planned to conduct several studies looking at cognitive empathy in survivors of childhood cancer that had to be postponed due to the covid pandemic.
