Mrs Laura MacDonald
- Research Associate (MRC/CSO Social & Public Health Sciences Unit)
Laura Macdonald graduated from the University of Glasgow with an M.A. (Hons) in Sociology and began working within the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in 2001 within the Places and Health Programme, studying the processes by which features of the local social and physical environment influence health. In August 2016 Laura obtained a MSc in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with distinction, from the University of Southampton, with her dissertation looking at associations between built environment supports for exercise within home and workplace neighbourhoods and physical activity behaviour.
Laura has been involved in the use of GIS software to map features of the local environment within Glasgow and Scotland, and her current research interests include:- spatial patterning of environmental ‘bads’, such as fast food, tobacco, alcohol, and gambling outlets, by area deprivation; and neighbourhood built environment supports for physical activity/active travel behaviour. Current projects include exploring how built environment change over time may be associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality, and how exposure to heritage sites influence health and well-being. Laura is also currently involved in Built Environment Context and Change Atlas (BECCA) project in collaboration with MRC Epidemiology Unit and the MRC Centre for Environment and Health.
