Professor Jim Lewsey, alongside School of Health and Wellbeing colleagues Dr Sharon Greenwood and Dr Bhautesh Jani, ran three sessions on ’substance use (drugs and alcohol), wellbeing and construction work’ with groups of Multiplex construction workers.

The sessions focused on how health, wellbeing and safety at work is associated with problem substance use. Evidence from studies from UK and Norway were summarised that showed substance use and hangovers affected employees’ moods and productivity. Key results were that 4 in 10 construction workers saying they found it hard to concentrate with a hangover, and 1 in 3 reporting making mistakes which had to be rectified on following days.

Participants took part in interactive activities where they were asked to rank the most harmful substances, provide descriptions of hangovers and whether the findings from the literature surprised them. At the end of the presentation, the researchers highlighted charities like Lighthouse and Turning Point that provide help and support to individuals with these issues.

Professor Jim Lewsey said: “it was a pleasure for us to be invited to run these interactive knowledge exchange sessions with construction workers helping build the new University of Glasgow Keystone Building. We thank Multiplex and all the participants for helping make these sessions such a success.”
