School of Health & Wellbeing

The School of Health and Wellbeing continues to foster collaborations with African partners, and Professor Peter MacPherson has recently taken over the directorship of the strategic partnership with collaborators in Malawi at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and in Zambia with University of Zambia.

These partnerships have been ongoing for several years with the University of Glasgow and partners in Malawi and Zambia jointly building new laboratories (Blantyre-Blantyre Research Facility and Lusaka Blantyre Blantyre laboratory). An annual strategic award from the Scottish Government International Development fund ensures both laboratories and the MALDENT project to build a new dental School in Blantyre Malawi remain supported.

Professor Peter MacPherson said: “The University of Glasgow’s partnerships with colleagues in Malawi and Zambia demonstrate the power of long-term, equitable international collaboration. Together, we have built research capacity, strengthened laboratory infrastructure, trained future health professionals, and generated evidence that is improving health outcomes across the region.

"I am delighted to take on the role of Director of these strategic partnerships and look forward to working closely with our colleagues at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and the University of Zambia to deepen our shared commitment to research excellence, education, and innovation. Continued support from the Scottish Government International Development Fund is helping to create sustainable platforms that will benefit communities, researchers, and students for many years to come."
