SPOTLIGHT ON... Flexible working

What options are available to us, who is eligible, and what is the process for requesting flexible working?

Flexible working has benefits both for employers (recruitment and retention of staff, reduced levels of absence, sickness and stress, a more motivated, productive workforce) and employees (improvements in health and wellbeing and overall quality of life).

IHW fully supports the principle and practice of flexible working, and will always try to accommodate any requests for a change of hours, location, or pattern of working, within the terms of the University of Glasgow Flexible Working Policy

All staff have the right to request flexible working (not just parents or carers), so long as they have been working within University of Glasgow for 26 weeks or more.

Flexible working options include:

  • working remotely (from home or a location other than your usual office);
  • part-time working;
  • changing your working pattern from the more traditional Monday to Friday "nine to five" to, for example, compressed hours, annualised hours, term-time working, or staggered hours;
  • job sharing.

A flexitime scheme is also in place for IHW staff up to and including Grade 6, enabling those who opt in to the scheme to have more day to day flexibility and build up flexi-leave to use at a later date.
