RCB hosts international training event

In November 2023, a team from the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics (RCB) was delighted to play host to the 29th Diabetes European Association for the Study of Diabetes Scientist Training Course, which took place on Level 5 of our beautiful new building
Between 06 and 09 November 2023, Robertson Centre for Biostatistics' Prof John Petrie and UofG School of Medicine's Dr James Boyle hosted the 29th Diabetes EASD Scientist Training Course – entitled "Diabetes Science in a Clinical Context"
Delegates from Australia, India, Italy, Germany, Greece, Poland, Romania and the UK spent three "jam-packed" days hearing from an excellent (mostly Glasgow) faculty including Prof Naveed Sattar, Prof Christian Delles, Prof Jason Gill, Prof Mike Lean, Prof Brian Kennon, Prof Ewan Pearson (University of Dundee), Dr Robbie Lindsay, Dr David Carty, Dr Sharon Mackin and Dr Gemma Currie.
Topics included current priorities for diabetes care, innovation, obesity, exercise, proteomics, precision medicine, adjunct therapy, diabetes technology and diabetes pregnancy.
Students presented their own current (PhD) work on Day 1 and then dived enthusiastically into a small group task to design their own research project – even working during breaks and in the evenings.
The last night of the course was celebrated with a visit to Glasgow Royal Infirmary Museum where Prof Miles Fisher gave a fascinating lecture on early use of insulin in Glasgow (in 1923), based on his recent research on historical source documents at the Mitchell Library. This was followed by an informal dinner at the Drygate Brewery.
Feedback from the students exceeded all expectations – the only suggestions were that the course should have been longer. We are confident that friendships and collaborations will have been sealed for life!
