In her latest update on all things community engagement, Susan Grant tells us about some recent events hosted by SHW, and the plans for our forthcoming community day in June 2023, with something for everyone...

"Feel Good Future" Community Day (Saturday 10 June 2023)

Researchers and professional services staff from across the School of Health and Wellbeing supported by Student Representative Council student volunteers are gearing up to welcome our local community into Clarice Pears on Saturday 10 June 2023 from 1pm to 3pm as part of this year’s Glasgow Science Festival (GSF)!

In addition to our "Glasgow’s Health" interactive exhibits, we will have lots of creative and fun table-top public engagement activities on offer throughout Byres Community Hub and an information stand from Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland’s Maryhill Health Defence Hub.

There is something for everyone so please come along and help us get the word out by picking up some flyers on level reception or sharing our GSF event page using #FeelGoodFuture.

The Public’s Public Health project update

We announced in last month’s Hawkeye that Byres Hub had been awarded Glasgow Knowledge Exchange small grants funding for "The Public’s Public Health" photovoice project to bring a range of perspectives on public health into our opening exhibition as part of the university’s Public Health centenary celebrations and provide a further opportunity to promote the work going on to improve health and wellbeing in Glasgow.

The project is now well underway, and the community engagement team has enjoyed delivering workshops in community and on campus to the groups from our four partner organisations (Outdoors For You, Active Life Club Women’s Group, Milton Rattlers and Govan Community Project Men’s Group.

We will now be working with the groups to curate an exhibition of their photovoice images to be displayed in Byres Hub temporary exhibition space in summer 2023.

SHW academic away-day (April 2023)

Our community science day and photovoice project are examples of how Byres Community Hub is helping SHW share our research, make local connections with organisations working on the ground to improve health and wellbeing and bring community perspectives into our learning and teaching and research and innovation.

At our annual academic away-day last month, our Community Engagement with Research Group ran a workshop where researchers were asked how they as individuals, as research teams and how we as a school can contribute to the community engagement impact goals developed through our Byres Hub consultation.

Campus Development Community Engagement Event (09 May 2023)

We were delighted to host an engagement event at the Clarice Pears building earlier this month and welcome members of the local community.

After some refreshments and time for the guests to look around Glasgow’s Health exhibition, Prof Kate O’Donnell opened the event on behalf of The School of Health and Wellbeing.

The event then featured several presentations, including discussions on community engagement within Clarice Pears and plans for campus development, from various individuals who shared valuable insights and information.

The event provided UofG Estates Campus Development team with an opportunity to meet with our neighbours, share the progress made since the work began at the Western Infirmary site, and gather feedback on any concerns. A spokesperson for the team said:

"As a civic university, the University of Glasgow was founded for the benefit of the city and its people. We collaborate with individuals, companies, and organisations throughout the city to co-design solutions that create real and lasting impact and opportunities in Glasgow and beyond. These events serve as an excellent opportunity to explore and understand the impact of our development on the local community."
