Research Summer School 2023

Students from Glasgow College who apply will discover how research really works, getting hands-on with exciting online projects

Research Summer School

Our annual 'Research Summer School' looks set to make a welcome return online in July 2023.

The 5-week course introduces Glasgow College students (who have successfully completed their 3rd year) to applied research methodology and practice. Being given a chance to work on substantial individual projects means working alongside experienced academic researchers who will act as Project Supervisors. Each project addresses an emerging research challenge in engineering, with group-work and collaboration also key.

Students will be taught and guided; however, they will also need to be self-motivated and show a flair for independent thought. Enjoying the cutting-edge research facilities and laboratories of Glasgow College UESTC, trainee researchers will ultimately present their completed projects to compete for Top Prize. The course aims to:

  • introduce students to working on a research project at a university
  • encourage independent thought and work
  • develop technical skills and understanding in a chosen specialty
  • encourage the application of the student’s current knowledge to an unfamiliar area
  • provide the opportunity to work in an area at the leading edge of engineering technology
  • develop presentation skills, both for a report and an oral presentation
  • give experience of project management

Projects last year included both hardware and software design and applications for wireless connectivity systems, ranging from AI-driven circuit design, tele-gaming, human-robot teaming, and intelligent semantic communications. A range of equally exciting projects are currently being developed to offer students applying this year.

Summer School participants will also be invited to attend guest lectures focused on real world scenarios - for example, on business-related topics such as setting up a company based on product development. They will also have fun taking part in a programme of social events organised by colleagues from our International Summer School team. As well as preparing for a future career in engineering research, why not learn more about Scottish culture and practise your English at the same time? The possibilities for adventure are clear!

Look out for more information from staff at our Chengdu campus on how to apply and seek nomination. You can also get in touch with Dr Yao Sun with any questions.
