Meet Dr Hasan Abbas

One of our newer Lecturers tells us all about his engineering passions, and his commitment to his students.
As both existing and new staff continue to excel in our ever-expanding team, we are happy to provide them with a chance to introduce themselves to readers via a short Q&A. This month, we hear from Dr Hasan Abbas, Lecturer at Glasgow College UESTC (University of Glasgow).
When did you join the team at Glasgow College UESTC?
In 2019.
Which subjects do you teach?
Introductory Programming and High Frequency Communication Systems.
Which fields of research are you most interested in and why?
Electromagnetics - electromagnetic waves are everywhere around us; delivering us the latest text message while we are out for a run; to sending those extraordinary images of our universe from space. Yet there are so many phenomena of which we have so little understanding. Why does a satellite lose its connection when re-entering the earth's atmosphere? Or why do cancer treatment techniques involving electromagnetic ablation work on some tumours and not on others? These are some of the questions that I like to think about.
What is the most memorable project you have been involved in at GC UESTC or elsewhere and why?
Talking specifically of GC UESTC, I am amazed at the potential of our students. One of my FYP students went on to develop an air quality monitoring platform. Coincidently, during the initial stages of the project, Covid struck and we were able to get some startling data on the air quality globally.
Can you tell us about a proud moment working at Glasgow College UESTC?
Every time I see my students excelling!
What attracted you to take on a role at Glasgow College UESTC?
Rarely there are places that offer two feathers on the hat. The world leading research environment of University of Glasgow and UESTC in the areas of light matter interactions in general, electromagnetics and wave propagation attracted me to join Glasgow College UESTC.
What or who inspired you to study engineering?
Simple - a quest to answer 'How?', keeps me going.
Tell us a about your hobbies and interests outside of work
Being with my family, enjoying nature, and 3D modelling.
