Electronics and Electrical Services

The team is made up of a cohort of around 10 electronics technicians, many with over 20 years experience and having worked in various departments of the University. They are all able to work in support of research across the 5 supported divisions and the majority of them support Teaching labs.

They are able to support other schools within the College of Science and Engineering, generally limited to consultancy, repairs and advice.

There is also an Electronics Component Store on Level 7 of the Rankine , this has a dedicated technician resource that manages the procurement of components, equipment and stationary in support of the school.

The majority of the technicians are based in electronics workshops on Level 7 of the Rankine Building with an additional workshop on Level 6 of the James Watt South building. Electrical/Electronics related teaching labs are based on Levels 7,6,5 and 3 of the Rankine building.

The electronics workshops have a comprehensive range of test and measurement equipment and there is laboratory scale PCB manufacturing capability in the main workshop at Rankine. The electronics technicians provide a full range of electronics workshop skills including:

  • Design/feasibility consultancy
  • Bespoke electronic equipment design and build
  • PCB fabrication
  • PCB assembly (through-hole and surface mount)
  • Fault diagnosis and repair
  • Electrical safety inspection and test (PAT testing)
  • Software development and interface
  • First line equipment maintenance and repair
  • Strong knowledge of H&S requirements including consultancy for risk assessments.
