Student Advising
Upon registration, each student is assigned an Adviser of Studies within the James Watt School of Engineering. Adviser details can be accessed via MyCampus.
Advisers do not provide academic tutoring or assistance with course material—these queries should be directed to course lecturers. Instead, advisers support students with issues affecting their ability to study, academic progress, curriculum choices, and career guidance.
During the first two weeks of the semester, students will be contacted and invited to meet their adviser. This short meeting is an opportunity to establish contact and should be attended.
Our intention is that you should keep the same adviser throughout your degree study and he/she will be able to provide you with reference letters and recommendations when you come to apply for a placement, internship or a permanent job after graduation.
The James Watt School of Engineering model is designed to deepen and maintain relationships between students and advisers. The intention is for students to remain with the same adviser throughout their degree, subject to standard progression. Advisers can provide references for placements, internships, and employment after graduation. For personal or medical issues during the semester, students can request an appointment via email. If necessary, advisers will refer students to University support services such as counselling, financial advice, or chaplaincy. All discussions are confidential.
During the semester if you should have problems, medical or personal, for example, you can ask for an appointment to see your adviser (usually by e-mail). If your adviser can’t help you directly, the University has many central student support services (counselling, financial advice chaplaincy etc) and your adviser will point you to the correct service to help you. Anything you tell your adviser will be held in the strictest confidence.
Class absences should be reported through the Student Absence system on MyCampus. Illnesses during the exam period or circumstances affecting performance should be reported via the Extenuating Circumstances system on MyCampus.
Advisers may be unavailable at times due to teaching or research commitments. If an adviser cannot be reached, contact Engineering Student & Academic Support for assistance. They will direct queries to the Senior Adviser for the relevant discipline.
The Chief Adviser is available to all students for any questions or concerns. Please enjoy your time studying with us.
