The University of Glasgow is committed to receiving and responding to student feedback in order to monitor and enhance the quality of the student experience within the institution. In the School of Education, informed by approaches across our portfolio of programmes and our professional accreditation standards, we are committed to engaging students to enable informed voice in relation to academic matters, learning and teaching, and participation beyond feedback. Moving this forward, we recognise that this must be co-constructed with students and the first step is a shared understanding of what ‘student voice’ means for our students and what that looks like in action.

In June 2022, Dr Louise Sheridan organised and led a ‘World Café' style event, at which undergraduate and ITE students and staff came together to talk about what student voice – whether individual or collective – means to them, and how informed voice can enhance student learning.

Some of the responses were:

  • Student voice is the opportunity for students to influence things that affect them
  • Student voice reaches marginalised students, enabling a wide range of voices to be heard
  • Student voice is a collaborative process between educators and students
  • Student voice provides regular opportunities for students and lecturers to talk about matters that are important, enabling open and honest communication
  • Through student voice, educators and students operate on a platform of solidarity & mutual respectsupporting one another
