Oracy for Learning in Mathematics and Numeracy
Communication is a key skill for mathematicians and for the effective doing of mathematics, yet it is often neglected in mathematics classrooms. Oracy for Learning strategies aim to change this. Creating structured opportunities for quality discussions during mathematics lessons provides pupils with opportunities to deepen their mathematical understandings and make their own sense of key mathematical concepts. The effective use of Oracy for Learning frameworks in mathematics is a rapidly developing area of research and development in mathematics education.
Attitudes Towards Mathematics
Despite decades of work, negative attitudes towards mathematics still persist in school classrooms and in wider society. Fully understanding how these attitudes develop, how they can be challenged effectively, and the role that teachers have to play in this is crucial for more effective school mathematics education.
Family Engagament in Mathematics and Numeracy
Involving parents/carers in their childrens' mathematics education can often be difficult. Many parents/carers hold negative attitudes towards mathematics themselves and can feel unable to effectively support their chidren. Finding effective strategies for schools and teachers to meaningfully support parents/carers to enagage with mathematics can lead to improved outcomes for everyone involved.
